First time I heard this was on Anthology of Recorded Events- a beautiful double album of their 60s stuff- as soon as I heard it I thought "wow, this is fantastic!"... 25 years later I found it on a cheap German CD. The song is Ray Davies take on the same runaway girt subject Paul McCartney wrote about in "She's Leaving Home" without the strings and sentimentality... going to hell in a handbag and not giving a damn. I know which song I prefer...

Big Black Smoke could have been among the most "offensive" tracks of The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society LP, with, let's say, Wicked Anabella...but it had to be released two years too early and to be replaced by a more polished but still excellent Starstruck...
